Nothing Special

A 4L golf ball collector in Slovenia, a Polish family coming together to bless their camper van before setting off on holiday, a Hungarian runner who may have once been a weightlifter... The East has switched over to a second life after the fall of communism and is giving itself up to a new culture of leisure. Martin Kollar (Slovakian) has been on a trip around the former Eastern Bloc countries which, since 1st May 2004, have become members of the European Union. “Bombarded with advertising they never used to have, the people dream of more of everything, more capitalism, more body-building... They copy new things but with their own traditions” he says. So he takes us with him to meet our new European friends with just one idea in his head: to find out what people do in their free time when, in contrast to their restricted working time, they can make their own choices. Figures pop up from his lens as though out of a jack-in-the-box. “When I was young, I never used to see this kind of shaven, strong bloke standing in front of the gym courtyard, he appears to be looking for the right kind of girl”. Martin Kollar calls his home region “Nothing special”. It is a place where the mountains are tall but never seem to reach the sky, where the sea (the Baltic) does not make you feel much like going in for a swim... And he captures them with a very special sense of tragicomedy.

The exhibition is made up of 33 colour prints, format: 60 x 80 cm.
