In 2002 Tiane Doan na Champassak undertook a project based
around faith, in Haiti and in India, where the inhabitants worship
the forces of nature in a particular way. In these countries earth,
water, air and fire can in turn be either beneficent gods or male-
volent spirits, benevolent elements to be venerated or destruc-
tive forces to be feared and placated with promises.
Ever since the earliest times, in these two countries man has
managed to tame his fear of the great beyond by entrusting his
fate to protective gods. With the inflexible support of faith, the
simple mortal is promised eternal happiness at the end of his
life on earth. It is this cycle of life, through the symbolic, spiritual
dimension of the four elements, which acted as a thread for
Tiane Doan na Champassak’s photographic project.
It is less about documentary photography than a visual, mysti-
cal quest which accompanies the subjects of the photographs.
Credo was carried out with both great respect and the neces-
sary distance and reveals mystical and religious practices which
are sometimes violent or wild, but always dominated by the
breath of a flawless faith, which the compositions underline in
the most intense way possible.
