“The images I produce don’t describe objects or events, they don’t have any story to tell, instead they aim to reveal tiny fragments of time”. This was how Bernard Descamps was thinking when he travelled to Sendégué, a little clay village lost in the immense inland delta of the river Niger in the north of Mali. The arid earth and water coming together and moving apart with the tides stretched out before the village as far as the eye could see. Life here is a gift from the river. But from one year to the next, this river seems to be becoming less bountiful, the desert is advancing, and the old people of the village have noted with some concern that the tide level is constantly falling on the rocky banks. For these people, troubles, hopes and joys are all measured by the movements of the water. These images speak of the happiness of a fragile moment in time – caught between two potential tragedies – where we can feel the breeze, the heat, a daily miracle, and the exchange with the other person who is being photographed. »
