Rencontres de Bamako

Bamako (MALI)

From 2009-11-07 to 2009-12-07

For nearly five years as I travel through Africa from north to south in a journey impossible. Initially this project was to take me a few months at most one year. Today I realize that these roads, I thought to borrow freely, do not exist. Roads and railways are nonexistent or very poor condition, closed borders, the war areas, mined. Africans are not free to travel on their own continent, because at each step, the passenger becomes a victim and must pay a debt of travel in order to continue to move. I remember during a trip from Dakar to Bamako, made by bus, this Ghanaian, Abu, who worked in Dakar and returned to Ghana. Arrived in Kayes to take the train, he collapsed at the entrance to the station because the dams and the controls were so many along our route that had not any money to continue. These roads are vital for Africans. Opening up Africa's foremost enable its inhabitants to move, exchange, or trade freely within their own space. This is a flagship project of the African Union to build and renovate roads between countries, however, one can imagine that if trade were not made by sea or air, beautiful roads may traverse the continent. After this long journey, it seems that all these barriers to moving people and goods are a real factor in underdevelopment. It is this invisible boundary, then, that I speak in my job, this border terrible you to block your every step ...
