Black Sea

Vanessa Winship

TOPS - 2008 World Photojournalism Festival

Shenyang (CHINA)

From 2008-06-22 to 2008-07-22

For me the water has always been a part of my life, part of me.By chance am from an Island surrounded by water. My name is Winship, and although I don’t know its real origin, I have always accepted it as being connected with the sea.My father and his father worked on boats. As a small girl our family house overlooked the water. And so even though this journey is to an unknown sea, I have connected with lives, if only momentarily, that are not mine, but could so easily be.I am interested in history and the telling of that history, about the traces of those histories on both the physical and psychic landscape.I am also interested in identity and how that identity is expressed,
The idea of borders and thoughts about belonging. For me the only natural border is the sea itself, all others are a manmade constructI am interested in dreams, desires and memory, both as collective and individual. The Black sea is a sea of paradoxes, it is a tideless sea, it is a sea that is almost 90% dead, and yet it has been the source of sustanence and life. The Black Sea has sat at the centre of three major empires with the sea at the centre of their strategic aims.
But this is also about a place steeped with a rich history of myth, legend and literature.I have explored the idea of what is real and what is fantasy, both as the teller of stories that lies somewhere between chronicle and fiction.I have used small texts that are in part tales I have heard. They are organic in their nature, and have, like the telling of histories, become something akin to Chinese whispers. The voice is only a momentary punctuation, a trace, a whisper a thought, but it keeps returning like the ebb and flow of the tide itself.
The Black Sea is not a classically beautiful; it is more of an acquired taste. This journey has taken me across vast stretches of land, and over the large body of water that lies at its centre.I have crossed and re-crossed many borders.I have seen all of its seasons.I have heard many different languages. As I travel along this land-locked sea, and when I stand at the waters edge, I love to be reminded that it is force far bigger than me.It is a body whose essence is devoid of politics, and prejudice.Sometimes when I visit I listen to what might be its breath.Occasionally if I forget its might, it bites or spits at me….But the Black Sea should not have human qualities ascribed to it….this is only a human fantasy. It is simply the Sea.
