“Among all my imaginary travels, one of the most important to me today is a travel around Parisian suburb. I was born there and I still live there, and that one word « suburb » brings to mind immediately the idea of sadness, violence, poverty, depression, grey, cold… This suburb we turn a blind eye and the back to as we look towards Paris, I’d like to wander all around it. Explore these places I roam everyday, bring a new perspective to the things we don’t see anymore, travel where no one travels, in this suburb which seems so familiar and that we cross so often without never taking the time to stop by. I want to make a color or black and white travel diary in a “here” and transcribe through pictures and words, the words told by the people I met during my travel, the questions and answers, impressions, feelings experienced during this long process of proximity.” Bruno Boudjelal

French with Algerian origins, Bruno Boudjelal practices photography as a way of living that interrogates continuously his own identity and brings us back to ours. When he decides with his father to go back to Algeria, he discovers a land, a family and a world at the same time. A world made of violence, familiar landscapes and people he talks to without really knowing where to stand. From there, he started a ten years and very personal exploration of Algeria, between travel diary and testimony, which will lead him from black and white photography to color photography. It will also make him accept the fact that his point of view is only subjective and imbued with his personal history but still curious of putting the everyday life and the History in perspective. Between two continents and two cultures, he is just generous by the way he tries to understand and transcribe North-South complicated issues.
