La Visite
Nicolas Comment

"In 2000 I came for the first time in Vitre. Patrick Le Bescont would publish the final book by Bernard Lamarche-Vadel, "Mise en Demeure" (with photographs by Jean-Philippe Reverdot). I was 25, I had just moved to Paris and Patrick had hired me as an assistant some time ago. The latest book by Bernard Lamarche-Vadel was thus the first book in which I participated: I had the script in hand and worked on the layout of text. I already knew the critic and soon feverishly read all his books. It was obvious to me than anything since Camera Lucida Roland Barthes had been writing about photography in France that has reached that level of tone, panache ... But I did not know that beneath the mask grating was hiding a critic distinguished novelist and singular poet "[...] Nicolas Comment (excerpt) La visite | This book is a tribute to the novelist, poet, in short to the artist that Bernard Lamarche-Vadel was (he passed away ten years ago). The visit takes place in the places ( Vitre where BLV created the art library) situations (The Castle Rongère where BHL lived) , and images of "women-animal", freely inspired by the book "Sa vie, son œuvre".

Another Country
Rip Hopkins

Another Country is the first book of photographs devoted to the British in France. Rip Hopkins' 68 portraits provide a record that is both personal and objective, showing the real and imaginary world of British expats in France. Having himself abandoned the UK, Rip Hopkins re-exa- mines his roots and his passionate relationship with France. Antony Mair, a British settler in the Dordogne considers what it means for him and others to be expatriates, while Pauline de La Boulaye, a French national sets out her view of the British, the photographer and the present time. These different accounts raise questions of identity and of belonging, in the context of a society adapting to globalisation. Distur- bing and surreal, Rip Hopkins' photographs resonate at the deepest levels of our consciousness.

Jane Evelyn Atwood (Photo poche N°125)
Jane Evelyn Atwood

Occupation Soldier
Ad Van Denderen

Since the end of the Cold War in 1990 and the expected conclusion of the Uruzgan mission in 2010, almost 90,000 Dutch soldiers have been involved in peacekeeping operations. What do we remember of them, what remains in our collective visual memory? Precious little. Peacekeeping does not produce spectacular images. Except when it goes wrong. The fall of Srebrenica is an open wound in Dutch (military) history. Even so, every day young men and women do their often dangerous duty. Drawn by the adventure, out of a need for camaraderie and sometimes also out of idealism and a sense of responsibility. In total, around 40 of them have lost their lives, more than half in Afghanistan. As part of their annual photo commission, Document Nederland, the Rijksmuseum and NRC Handelsblad newspaper asked photographer Ad van Denderen to give this history a face. Van Denderen followed the recruits during their training in The Netherlands and on their missions in Chad and Uruzgan: hard working, operating with caution; a frequently unglamorous existence. He also turned his lens towards family members. He captured the Christmas and New Year’s greetings being recorded in a television studio and visited the homes of families whose sons will never return – the target of insurgents as a result of their occupation. ‘Wars are begun because the lust for war exists,’ writes Arnon Grunberg. His polemic examination of the notion of civilisation forms the introduction to Occupation: Soldier. Grunberg visited ISAF, NATO’s peacekeeping and reconstruction force in Afghanistan, in 2006 and 2007.

The fall of the Berlin Wall was, without doubt, one of the major events of the second half of the 20th Century. But if you know the whole story, it is largely thanks to the media, thanks to the photographs we have seen… photos that have made headlines and become iconic images around the world.
