This is a book about insecurity. A portayal of those living a different life in the big city of Paris , of people who endured the roughness of the streets.
This is a book about humiliation , about the smell of whores and night life in cafés.
This is a book about the quest for self-idendity , about the right to live , about the right to own and control one’s own body.
This is also a book about friendship , an account of the life we lived in the place Blanche and place Pigalle neighbourhood. Its market , its boulevard and the small hostels we resided in.
These are images from another time. A time when de Gaulle was president and France was at war against Algeria.

About twenty Polaroids created by Strömholm in 1976 present the assemblies of images and objects and constitute so many visual plays on words that reveal the profound influence of surrealism on Strömholm.
Strömholm is very interested in art history and is very close to contemporary artists. He makes numerous portraits and discovers that he possesses a particular talent «to break through the shell of the artists».
Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, Tinguely et Spoerri, Le Corbusier, André Breton, Tapiès and Fernand Léger
“The pictures of a lost Paris does not call up our nostalgia but revive our curiosity and support our interest as a document. How explain in another way that we could, today, gaze with pleasure at the painted cloths of the fairground stalls in Pigalle as well as the “ portrait” of an impeded snake or the mischievous pose of a young transvestite ?”
Christian Caujolle
Betwenn 1950 and 1953, Strömholm joined up the Fotoform group led by Otto Steinert. He had the assumed name of Christer Christian and was took part in the Subjective Fotografie collective exhibition".
Post Scriptum Christer Strömholm is by far the largest monograph to detail one of Sweden’s best known photographers and his life. With nearly 270 of Christer Strömholm’s best photographs and around 60 complement pictures, a biography by author Johan Tell and essays by journalist Carole Naggar and gallery owner Christian Caujolle, it forms something which may well come to be a future standard work within the subject of photography. These are images of people whose lives I shared and whom I think i understood.
These are images of women – biologically born as men- that we call ‘transsexuals’.
As for me , I call them ‘my friends of place Blanche’. This friendship started here , in the early 60s and it still continues.

In memory of himself
Books such as In Memory of Myself and Poste Restante, not to mention a position as head of the eminent Fotoskolan academy in Stockholm, made Christer Strömholm one of Sweden’s most influential twentieth-century photographers. He differed from his colleagues in other ways, too--for instance, he didn’t mind being the subject of a photograph himself. In fact, he enjoyed it. Strömholm passed away in 2002, but these portraits of him by some of Europe’s finest photographers, including Lars Tunbjörk, JH Engström and Anders Petersen, live on.
Poste Restante
Originally published in 1967, Poste Restante has become one of the most collectible photography books from the mid-twentieth century, ranking alongside the better-known publications of Robert Frank and Ed van der Elsken. This photographic autobiography details Strömholm’s extensive travels across the globe in a book constructed as an Existentialist diary. Juxtaposing the urbane and the macabre, combining portraiture and street scenes with abstract photographic fragments, the book uses metaphor and visual pun in an unrelenting stream of consciousness. In its sequence and design, it is a book that prefigures much of contemporary photographic publishing and art practice.
A master of the street photograph, Strömholm documents the slightly odd and sexy, excerpted from the flow of everyday life in Sweden of the 1950s, 1960s, and later. Text by: Christian Caujolle Publisher: Hasselblad Center (1998) 160 pages Size: 14,6x21 cm ISBN :9163064839
Christer Strömholm (1918–2002) was one of the great photographers of the 20th century, but he is little known outside of his native Sweden. This exhibition presents his most powerful and acclaimed body of work: Les Amies de Place Blanche, a documentation of transsexual "ladies of the night" in Paris in the 1960s. Arriving in Paris in the late 1950s, Strömholm settled in Place Blanche in the heart of the city's red-light district. There, he befriended and photographed young transsexuals struggling to live as women and to raise money for sex-change operations. Strömholm's surprisingly intimate...
