Childhood Obesity in America (2012)

Photographies: Andy Richter / Aurora Elizabeth and Freddy were tired of being fat. Both 16-year-olds had been trying to lose weight since elementary school, but diets never made a difference. At 5-ft. 5-in., 291-lb. and 6-ft. 1-in. 345-lb respectively, the teenagers were undeniably obese and at risk for hypertension, heart disease, sleep apnea, and Type 2 diabetes. Freddy had gained 40 lb. a year for the last three years. In the past 30 years, obesity rates among U.S. children have more than tripled. Our national dialogue focuses on obesity prevention, but what do we do for kids who have already gained the weight? Freddy and Elizabeth chose to attend Wellspring Academy, a...

Dust Storm in Sydney (2009)

Australia's desert sands were blown to the oceanside by winds travelling at 65 km/h. This is the first time since 70 years that such an event takes place. Oculi photographers Tamara Dean, Dean Sewell, James Brickwood and Nick Moir photographed this unreal red-tinted atmosphere.

China 89 - 55 days at Peking (2009)

« In recent history, it is very rare that a nation of photographers have documented themselves the historical upheavals that their people lived. By putting together images of Chinese photographers of Agence VU on the 55 days of mad hope for freedom, then, the bloody drama, which have shaken China, it is primarily a testimony. But it is also a proof that the Chinese photographers took part in the democratic movement. From the earliest days of suppression, the Chinese government announced they were using television and photographic images collected by the Occident to identify and stop the protesters. From the beginning of the events, all of Occident television footage transmitted by satellite...

Retour d’exil by Atiq Rahimi (2002)

"Personally, I didn't want to take any pictures in a western way, no aesthetic pictures with nice colours, the kind of images that is too much seen in the media. It would have seemed obscene. So I rented this camera as an integral part of the decor: a big Polaroid camera with curtain and tripod, a very slow one. As a child, I was seeing photographers mumbling behind their lens and I thought it was magic words. Today, I know they were calculating the shutter speed according to the light, but children are still believing they are magic words. With this camera, I wanted to take "ID photos" of Kabul." Private "Mental geography" - Galerie VU

For more than 10 years, Galerie VU' has been promoting photographers of various ages, nationalities and inspirations. The portfolios presented in this issue of PRIVATE, as diverse as they are, have as a common denominator the notion of «mental geography».
Places, spaces and territories are considered, according to a double prospect – that of the artist and that of the world –, in their relationship to the spirit.

VU MAG

The creation of the review VU MAG opens a new page in the history of the Agency and of the Gallery VU's commitment for author photography.
The review will propose twice a year a space for the exploration of the possible relations between photography and the printed page, a new opportunity to demonstrate that rôle of discoverer and relay attached to the Agency since the beginning.
At a time where anyone can make an image and transfer it immediately, at a time where we are taken in a flow of images, from time to time recreational, informative, legator, commercial... the relevance of particular eyes, looking to question and understand the world are more than ever essentials. Because they don't stick, to imagery, because they ask us to look further and to see better.
If it's necessary to tell the facts, the chaos, the pains, the dramas of the planet, it's just as necessary to interrogate oneselft and to visualize the feelings, complex, that drive the people confronted to world more and more difficult to understand and to live in.Through their rigorous approach, because they are moved by a deep necessity, the photographers of Agence VU' and of the Gallery register in a long tradition of photography, the documentary approach which funded one the values that we need more than ever, humanism.

As a nod to the combined history of press and photography, 60 years later, VU MAG opens a new page in the history of photographic commitment of the Agence VU'. For its first issue, VU MAG invits to look at photography through the idea of filiation.

VU MAG 2 Japon

In 1968 a group of Japanese photographers and writers proposed a new look at photography and writing by creating the magazine Provoke. The initiative came to an end in 1970 with the exhibition “First, Abandon the World of Certainty”. Like Provoke at the time of the 1968 events and the 1920s weekly VU explored in our first issue, VU MAG seeks to decompartmentalize photography. With Japan, we once again affirm our belief that a dialogue between creative forms is healthy.
The photographers :
Daido Moriyama, Kosuke Okahara, Joji Hashiguchi, Risaku Suzuki,
Noriko Yamaguchi, Shomei Tomatsu, Ken Domon, Ryuji Miyamoto,
Anders Petersen, Pierre-Olivier Deschamps, Bertrand Desprez,
John Davies, Bernard Faucon, Gérard Rondeau et Stéphane Duroy.
This empathy that photography affords, here in connection with drawing and film, allows us to reposition it at the heart of meaning in its diversity of points of view, gestures, signs.

Agence VU' Galerie (Photo Poche n°107)

Over the years this photographic project undertaken in Rimini in Italy, and in Brighton in England in summer 1994, was later to take Albert et Verzone from Tysoland in Sweden to Jurmala in Latvia, by way of Nice in France, Venus and Neptune in Romania and Ibiza in Spain. You go to the beach to relax and lounge about, often when you are on your holidays or sometimes after a long...

Nearly twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, four years after the enlargement of May 2004, these transformations have acquired dimensions the full extent of which we haven’t yet been able...
