Chris Maluszynski / Moment

Born 1975 in Warsaw, Poland. Moved to Sweden at age 7. Studied
physics and electrical engineering, history of art, history of
photography and visual communication (MA) at the University of
Linkping, Sweden, and Sorbonne, Paris.

Began his professional career in 1995 and has since worked for most
major swedish newspapers including staff positions at Dagens Nyheter,
Svenska Dagbladet and Gteborgs-Posten. Also has professional
experience as a picture editor. Is one of the founding members of Swedish agency Moment.

Amato Opera, New York (2008)

The Amato Opera company was founded by husband and wife Tony and Sally Amato in 1948. The opera house is located on The Bowery, in New York's East Village, next door to where the legendary punk rock club CBGB used to be. While Tony acted as artistic director, selecting the productions, auditioning and casting, rehearsing and training the cast and conducting most of the performances, his wife Sally functioned as seamstress, light board operator, cook, box office manager, publicist, business manager, and, as Serafina Bellantoni, singer for the company until her death in 2000. Wasilla, Alaska, la ville natale de Sarah Palin (2008)

A hundred kilometres north of Anchorage, Alaska, we can find Wasilla, hometown and electoral stronghold of Sarah Palin, republican nominee to the vice-presidence. The one who, in a few day, has become known all over the world, grew up and lived here, in the far north of America. Chris Maluszynski went to Wasilla. People are celebrating the nomination, while others are demonstrating against Sarah Palin. But that doesn’t prevent inhabitants to dance in bars. So Wasilla is not so different from the rest of the country: people choose their side, but continue to live their life.

Tomato pickers in Florida (2008)

Immokalee is Florida's largest farmworker community. Migrant workers (mostly mexican and guantemalan immigrants) pick tomatoes for below poverty level wages under extreme working and living conditions. Cases of slavery have occurred, and workers are often mistreated. They workers are paid 45 cents for every 32-pound bucket of tomatoes collected. A worker has to pick nearly two-and-a-half tons of tomatoes - a near impossibility - in order to reach minimum wage. The Coalition of Immokalle Worker (CIW) is a community-based worker organization that fights for better wages and worker's rights.

US Naval base at Guantanamo Bay (2007)

The Guantanamo bay detention camp is the most famous US military prison. Prisoners were being captured principaly in Afganistan, and are suspected to be terrorists or talibans’ combatants. The camp get regularly talk about and soil the «democratisation work» of the bush administration. In april 2006, 558 persons were imprisonned in Guantanamo. In june 2006, the american Supreme Court announced that the exeptionnal judicial procedures of Guantanamo are illegal. In may 2007, Chris Maluszynski went to Cuba, where those «illegals enemies combatants» are imprisonned.

Battlecry, Christian evangelist youth movement, USA (2007)

Battlecry, Nissan Pavilion, Bristow, Virginia May 2007 Battlecry is a Christian evangelical youth movement, started by Ron Luce. By arranging rock concerts, and rallies around the US, the organizers say the gatherings are way for young Christians to speak out against what they view as destructive cultural elements in today's pop culture.

US - Mexico border (2007)

In this story, Chris Maluszynski draws a portrait of the social situation on the boundaries between Mexico and the United States. For the past years, the United States has known an important influx of Mexican immigrants, seeking in the neighbouring state a work and a salary higher than those in their own country. The border is also the area of important drugs traffic. To overcome those problems, American’s government has reinforced the border’s controls, pushing away these migration flux in total illegality.

The last mule train (2007)

Arguably the most remote mail route in the country, the Supai route is the last mule train delivery in the United States. The route brings everything from food to furniture to the tiny Havasupai Indian Reservation, consisting of 525 tribal members who live deep below the south rim of the Grand Canyon. The only way in and out of Supai is an eight-mile trail on foot, mule, or horseback. The first two miles of the trail consist of a dizzying series of switchbacks that careen along the red rock cliffs of the Grand Canyon's shale formation. Helicopters and air drops are impractical here, so the mule train makes the three- to five-hour trip five days a week, even through wind and rain....

KIPP Academy (2005)

The KIPP - Knowledge Is Power Program - is a network of schools in under-resourced communities in the United States. The schools are public but kids have to agree to spend 10 hours a day at school six days a week, and to keep to a high discipline. The KIPP was started by two motivated teachers and has proven to be extremely successful with a lot of students continuing on to college. The KIPP Academy in The Bronx ranks in the top 10% of all New York City Public Schools. It also has an orchestra where all the students play.

Tory Island, Ireland (2002)

Tory Island. A rock in the Atlantic Ocean northwest of Ireland. The island has a population of approximately 160 and its own king. There have been kings on Tory Island since the 5th century. The island's location, its harsh climate and since recently the lack of fish and work has gradually diminished its population. The only hope for the survival of the small population are the children of Tory. If they move out, a very old civilization and its culture will disappear forever.

Tory Island (Hannover)

Tory Island is a rock in the Atlantic Ocean northwest of Ireland. The island has 160 citizens and its own king. The island's harsh climate, its remote location and the lack of fish and work have gradually diminished its population. The children growing up there today may well be the last generation of islanders. Chris Maluszynski, who grew up in Sweden, works for Swedish newspapers today.
