Andrew Quilty / Oculi

Born in Sydney in 1981, Andrew Quilty has lived close to its beaches since beginning his life in photography in 2002. The coastal lifestyle has been the subject of much of Quilty’s work and continues to provide inspiration.

Currently the staff photographer for The Australian Financial Review Magazine, Quilty has also had his work published in various publications both in Australia and Internationally. His personal work explores an eclectic array of cultures from the alternative youth of Sydney’s inner western suburbs to the struggle of life in the outback and the ever changing and unpredictable moods of Australia’s coast.

Quilty’s work was showcased in Reportage, Australia’s leading festival for photojournalism in both 2005 and 2006. He was selected as one of Australia’s top 25 artists under the age of 25 in 2006 by Art in Australia and Noise and was a finalist in The 2006 and 2007 SOYA Awards, the Moran Photographic prize 2007 and received a Highly Commended in Sydney Life 2007.

Stories

Bushfires in Australia (2009)

In a rough black and white, and with a panoramic size, Andrew Quilty gives us a ghostly vision of bushfires’ ravages in Australia. Cars’ wrecks, destructed houses, pile of sheep dead bodies: everything here is destruction and desolation. Life seems to be out of these places. There are only burned trees left, running their shadows on crepuscular landscape.

New Zealand (2008)

Although far from a photographic expedition, these photographs document a trip taken by a group of friends to the North Island of New Zealand in search of waves. Icey Autumn mornings, frigid offshore winds and sombre, grey skies greeted the surfers most mornings but so did the sight of surf that many amongst the group wait all year for. Forecasts and swell reports were deciphered on a daily basis as the motorcade of camper-vans wound its way to all corners of the Island, their efforts repaid day after day as the yearly surf pilgrimage bore fruit once again.

Walkabout, the town of McKinlay, Australia (2007)

Located 300 km South East of Mt Isa in Northern Queensland, the town of McKinlay once played host to Hollywood when its pub, the Walkabout Creek Hotel, was used as a location for the film Crocodile Dundee. While the pub continues to attract tourists passing though, the town is isolated. Distance is on a huge scale, a 500 km round trip for a game of Friday night footy or 200 km to do the grocery shopping reality. Schooling is via School of The Air, so some children rarely have the opportunity to mix with others their age. The isolation however is part of the attraction for the residents of McKinlay and like many before some will stay forever.
