Agence VU - Stanislas Guigui
Stanislas Guigui

French photographer, Stanislas Guigui was born in Paris in 1969.
“If rock is walking on the wild paths of life, Stan Guigui embodies rock in its purest state.” (Rolling Stone magazine)
Interested in the social themes of exclusion and marginal groups, he has been building since 1996 a photographic work in which he is not moralising but questioning our capacity to get indignant about the injustices created by our society.
In 1996, he moves off to Colombia. As a consequence of the civil war, thousands of homeless people haunt the streets of Bogota and more precisely of El Cartucho district, the biggest Cour des Miracles in South America. In 2003, Stanislas Guigui is accepted by the residents of that neighbourhood. He will take photographs of them during the next 3 years, showing their miserable living conditions, the smoking of crack and the fights between men armed with knives.
Now settled in Marseilles, Stanislas Guigui takes photographs in and of the northern districts of this city. He realised several social reportages always focused on non-conformists. Otherwise, in 2013, he is sponsored by the Olympique de Marseilles to produce a series of portraits as part of Marseilles Capitale Européenne de la Culture.
In 2014, he published his second book “Atras del Muro” which gather portraits of “Neros” from El Cartucho district who pose having their back to a white wall like a fashion shoot.

Mongol Warriors (2014)

Each year during summer, Mongolia celebrates the Naadam. This week-long festivity celebrates the country’s independence from China. While huge territories are given away to the highest bidder and while the successive governments destroy the nomad culture little by little, when comes the Naadam the whole country vibrates back in Genghis Khan times with traditional sporting events like Mongolian wrestling, archer competitions, horse racings, Kazakh eagle hunting… The championships take place in the largest stadiums and are broadcasted on TV. Despite modern times and globalization, the Mongolian culture remains very strong. The events attract tens of thousands of spectators and a lot...

Atras del Muro, Colombia (2013)

The untamed “Neros” agreed to take part in a photo session organised like a fashion show. If I chose to have my models pose « behind » a wall, rather than in front of a wall, it’s because I believe that our modern societies tend to erect walls - visible or not - between people. On one side, there are those who match the trends of the moment and who conform to the norm and, on the other side, those who are said to be «useless». Those who since they cannot consume are no longer considered as part of the system. Stanislas Guigui «It’s hell it is about. On 20 hectares tens of thousands of people excluded from society live, survive. Enclosure, cut-throat, in the center of a...

Olympique de Marseille mug-chots (2013)

As part of "Marseille European Capital of Culture 2013", the "Olympique de Marseille" has commissioned the photographer Stan Guigui, to produce a serie of iconic portraits of former and current football players; of the new talents, the coaches, the players of the women's football team finally portraits of the football fans. Stan Guigui portraits are rough yet natural, far from the clichés and the caricatural image of the football player and the football fan. His images are frontal and direct, in the same vein as the serie, Almas del Inferno, made in the Cartucho (Quarter of Bogota, Colombia).

France, Il Semaforo (2011)

Il Semaforo ( traffic light in Italian) or the story of Julia Enache, 1m20, 37 years and of her son Costa Enache, 1m30, 19 years. They are both Romanian people and dwarfs. I knew them during the spring 2011 in Marseille, they begged at the traffic light, at the corner of the street Paradis and Canebière. They lived in a little cheap hostel close to the station Saint Charles and everyday, from 10h to 17h, they were at this traffic light, tirelessly, begging something to pay their room, some pieces of pizza and clothes about 3 euros at Papy, the Marseillais Tati. During these 18 years that they will be in the town, this traffic light will be their office 7 days a week, and their own...

France, Giant Feet (2011)

When he walks out on the streets, people stare at him as if he was a freak. And yet, the Moroccan giant is extremely vulnerable. His life is hell and his body a constant ordeal and source of ceaseless pains. Fragile and sad, lonely and bored, the giant dreams of, one day, experiencing love and meeting a woman who could help him endure the weight of his large 6,5 feet (2m46) carcass, a prison to his child-like soul. In the daily routine - commute, work, sleep - nothing is made for his size. Every little task is difficult and takes its toll. Suffering from a brain tumour, which hits the pituitary gland and leads to growing disorder, the Titan has to be injected with hormones that cost...

France, Cabaret New Burlesque (2011)

They are American, overflowing with vitality and proud to be round! These are the gargantuan creatures of the most outrageous show of the year: the New Burlesque Cabaret. Antidote to the anemic models that symbolize the artificial and sinister fashion, the New Burlesque girls conquered the French public - with the help of Mathieu Amalric's film On Tour which was dedicated to them. The show is a mixture of eccentricities inspired by the burlesque humour of silent films and queer codes. Ultra kitsch decors, flaming red or blond hair, unabashed curves, outrageous make-up and above all provocative costumes. The New Burlesque is a revised version of a genre which is firmly rooted in the...

Calle del Cartucho, Colombia (2008)

Displaced by the armed conflict that tears apart the country since over 60 years, dozens of thousands of homeless people are invading the streets of Bogota, the capital of Colombian. Abandoned by the system, entire families have been left to sink into poverty and criminality. Located right in the heart of the city, two blocks away from the presidential palace, the district of the Cartucho became their refuge. Facing poverty and a huge drug calamity that keeps spreading, this place has quickly changed into a vast assembly of more than 20.000 odd residents. Most of them are beggars, robbers and criminals, and they have gathered in a brotherhood and call themselves the “Neros”, from...

Cuchillo Bohemio, Colombia (2008)

Determined to survive since birth, Neros love to defy death and are ready to die or kill to prove their bravery, or madness. Life on the streets is made of danger and adventures, everyone carries at least a blade to defend themselves in a world where a knife or machete fight is part of daily violence. To the poorest the most important value is honour. Hence fights for money, women, for an insult or simply for of a look… Those fights are very impressive and extremely violent. The opponents get so badly wounded that at times the battle can end by death if a vital organ or an artery is touched. But in general, the duel stops when there is blood.

Almas del Inferno, Colombia (2005)

Thieves, gangsters, murderers, drug addicts… I met many people with eyes glowing of paranoia and sparkling with madness. They were so close to bestiality, they looked like wolves. But in those broken faces, I also found a great deal of gentry. Most of the people I had in front of me, zonked out by life, were still proud and strong enough to survive a doomed existence. Rebellious gaze rejecting the religious, moral and political hypocrisy; these are people who can no longer tolerate the injustice of a system that has segregated and abandoned them.

Bolero Bogotano, Colombia (2003)

As if coming out of some 60’s films, celebrating six shooters and highwaymen, the Mariachis groups are a true part of folk culture in Colombia. Musicians offer their services for 30$ an hour and are sought for to celebrate important events (departures, weddings, burials, births…) or just for parties. The Mariachis are of Mexican origin and wear a typical suit called charro, the famous sombrero hat, and interpret serenades, romantic ballads or boleros. The groups are formed by 1 to 7 musicians who play the guitar, trumpet, acordeon, violin and bass. These minstrels of another time have cowboy mindsets and have a reputation for heavy drinking which usually ends up in free-for-all...

Altras del Muro

Back against the wall

To live with your back against the wall. Men and women humiliated by life, eaten alive by drugs, never giving up.They know they are being tracked by police, hunted by paramilitaries and, above all, haunted by the agony that comes. However in the Cartucho, the Kingdom of elementary forces, something stronger arises; a powerful will to exist and survive through these trials to the end. Some smile when facing the lens, knowing that nothing makes sense. One after the other, lined up according to the photographer's instructions, they emerge from luminous backgrounds, intensifying shapes and colors. By accepting the photographers invitation, the outcasts show a pride and lucidity that can't be found anywhere, except in despair.

Nowhere can we better see the difficult relationship between empathy and photography. We're at the border of the testimony, the border of morals. The time has come for the miserable to overcome the camera and operator. Without illusions or actual hope, they show themselves, flaunting themselves in the hope of regaining dignity. Because behind that wall, knowing that we're watching, they send us their silent images, snatched from destiny and stolen from death.

Cabaret New Burlesque

Touched by New Burlesque movement in what it represents, both aesthetically and ideologically : a glamorous and sexy revolt against stereotypes established by our societies, Stan Guigui followed the Cabaret New Burlesque during their tour in Paris, from the Theatre de la Cité to the Cesar’s Ceremony 2011 for the movie « On Tour » of Mathieu Amalric.

The Regional Council gives carte blanche to Niépce Museum to honor contemporary photography at the Hotel de Region. As part of its policy of supporting the visual arts, it carries in fact a particularly close look at the valuation of young contemporary artists. A selection of ten photographs from Stanislas Guigui of the \"Bolero Bogotano\" series is shown with four other young photographers supported by the museum: Pétremant Philippe François Burgun, Virginia Marnat-Leempoels and Mazaccio & Drowilal. As if coming out of some 60’s films, celebrating six shooters and highwaymen, the...
