Gardens of plenty, France
2008

“Jardins de Cocagne” are organic market gardens which employ people confronted to social and professional exclusion situations. Giving work to those people, away from employment, and accompanying them efficiently allow them to regain confidence in themselves, to regain social marks, and to consider gradually a professional project.
In order to provide the financial balance of the Gardens, the production is sold every week in baskets of season’s vegetables to customers who take out a subscription. “Jardins de Cocagne” employs more than 3000 people, and shares out every week their organic products to more than 13000 French families.
Photographer Stéphane Goussard crossed France to testify this initiative, which makes a strong link between social problems and environmental issues. Between Nantes, Limoges, Chambery, Thaon les Vosges, Avignon, Lyon, and Mosempron-Libos, he photographs the work of men and time for a book distributed by “Réseau Cocagne”.
