Photography Workshop
in Sanary-sur-Mer

Denis Dailleux
The portrait in situ

Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th of May, 2014
To produce a portrait "in situ" is to find the perfect balance between
the model, its attitude, and the environment in which the portrait is
shot. This approach is perfectly mastered by Denis Dailleux, to such
an extent that it is impossible to take his portraits out of the
context of the country they were photographed in. As shown by his
photographs shot in Cairo or more recently in Ghana.

In Sanary-sur-mer, Denis Dailleux will help the participants master
the Mediterranean direct sun-light, and he will guide them through
the choice of the best frame and back-drop, which are fundamental in
the production of a good portrait. He will also talk about how the
photographer should - or should not - intervene in the manner the
model poses for the camera, and hence creating a bond between the
latter and the photographer. An alchemy Denis Dailleux being
particularly fond off, he enjoys observing and deciphering for himself
but also for others.

Biography

Denis Dailleux
Born in 1958 in Angers. Lives in Cairo.

With his renown delicacy, Denis Dailleux’s photography appears calm yet incredibly demanding. It is traced with permanent doubts and coloured by the vital personal relationship he maintains with those he frames within his camera.

His passion for people has encouraged him to take up portraiture as his preferred means of representing those with whom he would like to become close. He used this method with actress Catherine Deneuve as well as countless anonymous subjects from the slums of Cairo. He works with the same discretion he expects from others, without complaint, and hoping that all will go as planned. Patiently, he has constructed a unique portrait of his beloved Cairo to create, between the black and whites of exemplary classicism and the colours of a rare subtlety, an absolute alternative to all the cultural and touristic clichés that clutter our thoughts.
In recent years, while pursuing a photographic portrait of Egypt
through his latest and more personal and formal series ("The martyrs of the
revolution "," Mother and Son "), Denis Dailleux has also travelled to Ghana to
discover other relations (between the body and the environment, the
community, between the body, life and death), that have opened new
horizons in his photographic quest.
