The photographic meeting Portrait(s) - City of Vichy

Denis Dailleux's name is associated with the delicate art of portraiture. The photos of children he took in Persan-Beaumont (Val-d'Oise), in the 90s, are less a documentary photo than a gesture towards another.

Framing children growing up in crowded cities is a challenge. Denis Dailleux raised it by tightening the decor so as not to linger more than on the small bodies, pushing back in the shade the hard matter of the walls. These black and white images, born of a secret chemistry, testify to his ability to divert stereotypes of the suburbs to reintroduce grace and innocence.

"It was while returning from my village where, during the summer, I had photographed the inhabitants and my great-aunt Juliette that I met in the Coral train of the boys of the city "The Village" of Persan. They were about ten and had spent a few days of holidays in Sables-d'Olonne. They wandered from wagon to wagon with a radio cassette that broadcast rap without anyone calling up to them. I showed them the pictures of Juliet and I remember that when they saw them they said "Class! ». And it was at that very moment that I asked them if I could meet them in their own city. Coco gave me his phone number. At that time there was very little talk about the suburban problems but it was not without a little apprehension that in the early fall of 1987 I finally decided to call Coco. He told me to meet him the following Sunday at the Persan-Beaumont station. Soon I knew I had something. Like a photographic revelation allowed by the children letting go in front of my lens." Denis Dailleux

On April the 19th 2018, the book "Persan-Beaumont", published by Le bec en l'air, will be available in bookshops.
