How can one photograph something that doesn’t exist any more and that people have tried to erase ? Over the past seven years, Kathryn Cook has been patiently enquirering on the traces of the Armenian Genocide - the first genocide in the history of the twentieth century - which lead to the death of over one million Armenians in Turkey. After being shown at the MuCEM, the exhibition "Memory of Trees" is on display in the museum Nicéphore Niépce .

With a contemporary photographic style, where poetry meets documentary, Kathryn Cook manages to untie the thread of a fragmented history composed of things unspoken and denials, through the testimonies of Armenians and Turks she met in Armenia, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Israel and Marseille.
With this body of work, she holds on to the remains of a legacy, which she recorded in a stunning narrative manner that combines photographs in black and white and in color.
The title “Memory of Trees” refers to the Turkish village of Ag?açl?, in the east of Turkey, photographed extensively by Kathryn Cook and which is a sort of metaphor of her artistic approach. In Turkish, Ag?açl? means "with trees" or "The square of the trees".
This village, which before 1915 was Armenian, is now inhabited by a majority of Kurds who are reviving the tradition of silk weaving as it was practiced in the past by the Armenians.
With this work, she offers a new way of dealing with questions of representation, suffering and tragedy, proceeding by alliteration and symbols.

This exhibition is co-produced by the MuCEM and Marseille-Provence 2013, European Capital of Culture, and in collaboration with the Musée Nicéphore Niépce (Chalon -sur- Saône), the Armenian Youth of France and Le Bec en l'Air éditions.

Opening : Friday, February 14th.
