Family (2014)

Claude Pauquet has conceived of a procedure with families from French region Poitou-Charentes of wich he has made portrait between documentary and fiction. He photographs them at home, gathering the families all together under a meticulously choosen light. He elaborates with them a photographic set-up based on a game about intimacy and recreating a moment in the family life. Only one instruction is expressed : not looking at the camera. Settings and characters are put together in a single shot through a quite simple plan : an unique optical and a fixed frame. Consequently Claude Pauquet transforms living rooms into theater; children and parents become players of their own roles. The...

Autumn's Residence, France (2014)

To question the territory around highschools and to stage posing high school students, both young adults and players performing in this peri-urban theatre, this sums up Claude Pauquet’s project on which he worked during the winter of 2013 at the highschool of Bois d’Amour in Poitiers. The special feature of this highschool is that it is located in the outskirts of the city and Claude Pauquet has photographed the highschool students during stagings in areas near their school : parking lots, woods, hotels, car garages, hypermarkets, brownfields and vacant land, all of these are places where you rarely see pupils. The photographer asked the high school students to take a step to the side...

India, Veda's children (2014)

South India, in Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala, the Vadakke Madham Brahmaswam Vedic Research Centre is one of the oldest Vedic schools in the world. Students are learning the Vedas, a body of sacred texts written in Vedic Sanskrit and verbally passed on through the Brahmans (at the origin of the texts). Claude Pauquet met and photographed students aged 7 to 15 intending to be Veda’s teacher or to have a monastic life. Topless, they wear the Dohtî (a traditional dress from South India) and the Vajnopavitam, a sacred cord they wear from the left shoulder to the right hip. After the morning ablutions, children devote themselves to different rituals and Vedas chanting, required...

France, Fake (2011)

With the series « Fake », Claude Pauquet puts down his large format camera in the alleys of Parisian fairs of tourism, aeronautics, police forces, car or erotic show. He makes it a rule to be slow and patient, a way for him to go against the trend in those exhibition halls where the latest new items soon to be obsolete are presented. All is done to put visitors at a furious pace. Each stand, each item is followed by another one…and visitor is allow to stroll without seeing presentation tricks. Assault rifle, gleaming four-wheel drives, simulation of a cruise on the Mediterranean Sea are presented in the same cardboard sceneries, on the same Plexigalss displays. An emergency exit...

France, A few holiday pictures... (2010)

The backpack is too heavy, it's a hot day. The water is too cold, the book fell down in the water, and the car is overheating going up the passes. In Aragon, the abandoned village of Otin is looking down at us; which difference in height for today's hike ? … Claude Pauquet gathered a series of « weak points » from his family vacation, between Aragon and Brittany.

A tous les Français (Charles de Gaulle) (2010)

This year, France is getting ready to celebrate a double anniversary : Charles de Gaulle's radio appeal of June 18 1940, urging french people to resist the Nazi occupation, and his death in November 1970. "For us, having a look at Charles de Gaulle meant :"That's what our father and grandfathers were like" (Philippe Labro). Two pictures led Claude Pauquet to start a series on Charles De Gaulle: first, the illustration from the package of the "Laughing Cow" cheese, twisted into a caricature of General De Gaulle in the 1960s and then, an invitation card sent by the Elysée and used as a bookmark in a book about De Gaulle. Its addressee, the photographer’s mother, former prisoner of...

New Fabris factory in Châtellerault, France (2009)

An indication of the difficulties facing the European auto industry and its workers, summer of 2009 was marked by the discovery of gas cisterns around the New Fabris factory in Châtellerault. This act of anger, seeing as there was no detonator, primarily aimed at drawing attention to the situation of the factory’s workers and the company’s susceptibility to the economic crisis and factory relocation. These workers are no longer fighting for their jobs, but they are fighting for decent severance packages.

Urban Landscape in Poitou-Charentes (2009)

A urban trip in Poitou-Charentes. Claude Pauquet photographs the urban landscape of main towns of Poitou-Charentes between 2005 and 2008 for an assignment of the Poitou-Charentes Region. He focuses on ordinary moments, a place in mutation and offers a view of intermediate suburban spaces. The shooting was realized in colour, with a big frame chamber.

Au bout des certains, France (2006)

From 2002 to 2006, Claude Pauquet began a trip between the Atlantic coast and the Channel coast, from Hendaye to Bray-Dunes. He was very closed to the coasts to take the pictures , earthly plying from one place to another in order to explore an inside border line between the shores and the ocean, between the natural landscapces and the unspecified spaces.

Convoy to the East, and way back (2002)

In 1997 I conducted a study on the route of the deportation of my mother, a resistant detained from 1943 to 1945 in Auschwitz, Birkenau (Poland), Ravensbrück (Germany) and Mauthausen (Austria). I have cut the 28 months deportation long into two periods: a winter trip to the detention and the way back to France in spring, the day before the commemoration of 1st May 1945. I followed the very close route, arriving at Auschwitz camp on the 27th of January, the "same" day she arrived there 54 years earlier. Though I undertook a trip to Eastern Europe. The known representation of the entrance to the camp of Birkenau, the long black building flattened in its snowy light, decided me to...

What color for the Marais? (Coulon)
From 2009-10-16 to 2009-11-11

Between 2008 and 2009, Claude Pauquet was in residence in the Marais Poitevin, at the invitation of the Park. He chose as title as his work "What color for the Marais ?", meaning the color that is chosen, we do not share in chromo postcard. The main question of the photographer has revolved around how to address the Marais, this landscape born of the sea, beyond the tourist imagery related to the "Green Venice" how to enter this territory and what route, what crossing to take? Portraits meeting succeeding the landscape. The work was conducted at the large format.
