Michael Grieve

Born in in 1966 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Britain.

Michael Grieve obtained a BA in Film, Video and Photographic Arts from the Polytechnic of Central London and then graduated with an MA in Photographic Studies from the University of Westminster in 1997.

He has worked mainly as a feature and portrait photographer for publications such as Weekend Guardian Magazine, Independent Magazine, Sunday Times Magazine, Observer Magazine, Le Monde, and Libération. His first book, "No Love Lost," is about the tumultuous and intimate natures of sexual environments. He is currently working on his second book, "In Passing," a visual journey through the motorway and airport hotels of Britain.

London riots (2011)

Since August, London has been undergoing the most violent riots of the past decades. Youth from the northeastern districts such as Tottenham and Hackney fight police forces in the UK capital. The shopkeepers and inhabitants fear the lootings. The situation has been highly sensitive since the death of a young man killed by police forces in Tottenham. On Clarence road and Mare Street, the population witnesses, powerless, the lootings of grocery shops and petrol stations. Facing the incapacity of policemen to maintain security, the Turkish community of Kingsland Road decided to protect their shops themselves.

Killing Kittens, England (2009)

In less enlightened times the catholic church, in all its oppressive wisdom, propagated the myth that every time a woman gives herself sexual pleasure god kills a kitten. The term ‘killing kittens’ has become a colloquialism for female masturbation and it has been adopted by a movement of libertine women in London, headed by Emma Sayles, who have set up an elite sex club where women are the sole members. Men are only allowed in at the invitation of women. This is a unique club to England, where women can enjoy free sex within a safe and controlled environment. No Love Lost is a visual project that inhabits heightened sexual environments in contemporary England. People featured are active in the increasingly entwined and performative worlds of pornography, prostitution and stripping. What they share is a measured psychological engagement with strangers in close proximity that is a purely physical and sexual union lacking in affection. Fantasy is played out within the frame of constraints and closeness is kept at a distance. Menace is always present, control is often threatened. Means to the end : gun crime in London (2008)

In recent months the UK has suffered a spate of killings from guns and knifes and the rise in ‘gang’ culture has dominated the news. Despite the arrests and subsequent imprisonment of the Jamaican gangs, the Yardies, some years ago, gun crime in the UK has continued. Emulating their Yardie predecessors, disparate youths are forming gangs and are involved in selling drugs, guns and running prostitution. Operation Trident is the police task force who respond and investigate gun crimes amongst the black community. Operation Trafalgar deals with other (white) gun crime.
