Laerke Posselt

Laerke Posselt, born in 1984, is a photographer based in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Posselt has studied Art and Documentary Photography at Fatamorgana and has a BA in Photojournalism from The Danish School of Media and Journalism. As part of her education, she underwent an 18-month internship as a photographer at the Danish daily, Politiken.

Her work has appeared in publications such as Politiken, The New York Times, Le Monde, Libération, Russian Reporter and Newsweek Japan and she has been dispatched to Estonia, Spain, Egypt and Uzbekistan among others.

Posselt’s awards include a first prize in World Press Photo, a first prize in Pictures of the Year international and awards in PDN Photo Annual, the Danish Pictures of the Year as well as in UNICEF Photo of the Year. In 2013 Posselt was nominated for the Joop Swart Masterclass and participated in the Eddie Adams Workshop.

Yrkingar (ongoing project) (2017)

This is a diaristic photo essay from the Faroe Islands. Situaded between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, the Faroe Islands have always been an isolated society of approximately 450 square miles of volcano remains. Religion, tradition and the big forces of nature are main factors in the lives of the around 50.000 inhabitants. Yrkingar is the faroese word for poems.

Q* Bending Gender (2016)

The patriarchy that has been the normality for centuries is dissolving in Northern Europe and other parts of the Western World. Now, 100 years after women in Denmark were given the right to vote, the gender is up for negotiation. At the international fashion weeks transgenders went down the catwalk for the world's biggest fashion houses, the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest was both woman and man, at the American Facebook you can choose from up to 50 gender identities, and Denmark changed the law in September so that transgender people are allowed to change their civil registration number from male to female or vice versa, if their gender identity doesn't match their biological...

USA, Beautiful Child (2012)

A child beauty pageant is a beauty contest featuring contestants as young as one week old. In preparation, the children are spray tanned, done makeup, false eyelashes and nail, wigs and dresses with as many rhinestones as possible. Some of the girls also wear false teeth and contact lenses. This reportage portrays three different child beauty pageants and the daily life of Sophia and Evie, two two-year-old contestants. The photos were shot at different venues in Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina.

Laerke Posselt\'s series of portraits \"Q* the queer project\", questions the notion of identity and gender, and the aesthetic expectations that are traditionally associated with it. By using the classical photographic portraiture system to represent people who defy the normative visual codes of the feminine and the masculine, she invites critical reflection on the binarity of the classical and gendered vision of the world.

The J.F Willumsens museum explores the evolving perception of woman in western societies, from classic to queer. Within the scope of the reflection undertaken by this collective exhibition, the Danish photographer Laerke Posselt investigates the notion of femininity and put into question the traditional division of the world into two distinct categories : men vs. women; masculinity vs. femininity.
