Agence VU - Raphaël Neal
Raphaël Neal

Raphaël Neal was born on 12th July 1980 in Orsay, France.
He lives and works between London and Paris.

His photographic work has been exhibited and published in France and internationally since 2005. The on-going series Bates Productions presents stills and posters of real actors starring in imaginary movies. Through self-portraits he explores themes which continually fascinate him such as solitude and seduction, boredom and imposture. His series de qui aurais-je crainte ? was entirely shot outdoors in locations containing no trace of civilization and pays tribute to the virtues of faith and independence. Shot in different countries, his series of self-portraits, IKWIG!, depicts characters who seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong moment. He recently finished a photo series inspired by movie memorabilia, Rescapee, followed by new pictures inspired by theatre and opera memorabilia shot mainly in Italy, Les Nouveaux vestiges. In 2015, Raphaël Neal released his first long feature in France and in the Unites States. FEVER tells the story of two young Parisian criminals. More infos here. He is the Opéra de Rouen 2017-2018 season's main photographer. He is now working on his second long feature, Nuée ardente (Burning cloud).

Series

The Pied Piper (2019)

English clarinettist Oliver Pashley (Britten Sinfonia, The Hermes Experiment...) is at the heart of this ongoing photographic series inspired by the story of The Pied Piper. Alternating between studio shots and more spontaneous outdoor sessions with natural light, the portraits summon at times the aesthetics of the Kodachrome of Hollywood's golden age and at other times the imagery related to the mysterious German legend which tells of the magical power of a musician who is able to free a city infested with rats - but to also lead children to death in a collective trance.

Gone Fishing (2017)

Upon leaving Paris in 2017, Raphaël Neal settled for several weeks in a house next to the erupting crater of Stromboli, on the mythical island of the same name made famous by Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman. As he was working on his new script Nuée Ardente (Burning Cloud), a road-movie in Italy, Raphaël photographed, every day, the Aeolian Islands and in particular the remote and steep village of Ginostra, home to the smallest port in the world, where there are no cars or roads - only thirty inhabitants and three donkeys. In a similar vein to his movie project, which tells the story of a young man who decides to disappear, these dark and foggy pictures evoke a bittersweet...

Les Nouveaux vestiges (2017)

Inspired by his passion for cinema and his collections of cinema and theatre memorabilia, Raphaël Neal produced two similar series: Rescapee and Les Nouveaux vestiges (The New Remnants). Here, false items of memorabilia – press photos of actors, magazine covers orpostcards for which the photographer’s friends posed - are re-photographed on natural backgrounds, from Iceland to southern Italy’s sulphuric landscapes, as if stumbling upon surviving relics from an apocalypse.

Rescapee (2016)

Inspired by his passion for cinema and his collections of cinema and theatre memorabilia, Raphaël Neal produced two similar series: Rescapee and Les Nouveaux vestiges (The New Remnants). Here, false items of memorabilia – press photos of actors, magazine covers orpostcards for which the photographer’s friends posed - are re-photographed on natural backgrounds, from Iceland to southern Italy’s sulphuric landscapes, as if stumbling upon surviving relics from an apocalypse.

IKWIG! (2014)

The self-portraits from this series share one key similarity: they are related to the production and the direction of Raphaël Neal’s first feature film, Fever, released in theatres in October 2015. After fighting for years to make his movie, Raphaël needed to work alone again and imagined characters appearing in the wrong place at the wrong time: a thief on a deserted beach, a somnambulist on the seashore, a “Lady of Shalott” on a boat marooned on the mainland… Shooting self-portraits for the first time away from the studio, in the vastness of the landscapes of Norway and Scotland or in the woods and fields from his childhood in France, Raphaël was able to reflect on loneliness,...

Bates Productions (2011)

As a child, Raphaël Neal named his imaginary film production company Bates Productions, in tribute to the title character of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, Norman Bates. More than ten years before shooting his very first film, he started to produce movie production stills…of films that only existed in his mind. Based on the principle of old lobby cards that distributors used to send to movie theatres (generally in batches of eight), most of them were made between 2001 and 2011: A Boy’s room (2001) which depicts the daily life of a lonely teenager, Doppelgänger (2007, with actors Julie-Marie Parmentier and Salim Kechiouche) which tells the story of a woman who fallsin love with two physically...

de qui aurais-je crainte?* (2011)

With the desire to leave behind the artificial light and richdecoration of studio sets in order to create pictures in naturewithout roads or construction, Raphaël Neal imagined a series built around the colour red. Referring to pagan art, at timesrecalling the aesthetic of Pier Paolo Pasolini or Werner Herzog’s movies, the portraits of models painted in red and the landscape pictures of De qui aurais-je crainte? (Who would I fear?) give us a glimpse of the futile beauty behind a ferocious need for loneliness on the fringes of the modern world. This series was published as a portfolio co-edited by Editions de l’Oeil and Chez Higgings and a book at Editions du Bec en l’Air, with a text by...

BATES PRODUCTIONS

She’s a night office cleaner and hates the cold buildings and her life in general. Suffering from awful migraines, she ends up throwing a chair through a window. Something inside her sets her free and she sees a mysterious red priest.

Raphaël Neal’s enigmatic photos inspired Alice Zeniter to write a work of contemporary fiction about loneliness in cities and the speed with which communication networks invade our lives.
