"Australia is burning"

Since September 2019, Australia has been hit by devastating violent fires. The east coast, ravaged by a severe drought, has been hit by uncontrollable bushfires. Coupled with a record-high heat wave from the west, the situation is only getting worse.

The fires began in September in northeastern Queensland before spreading to the state of New South Wales.
Photographer Dean Sewell travelled to some of the worst fire sites between November and December 2019, including Hillville, Green Wattle and Gospers Mountain.

While firefighters fight the flames on a daily basis and try to contain the fires in extreme weather conditions (almost 50C have been recorded in Sydney), the fires continue to spread towards the south-east of the country.

Millions of Australians living in coastal cities and in Sydney, the State capital, are suffocated by a veil of toxic smoke. Currently, at least 24 people have lost their lives, including 3 volunteer firefighters, 6 million hectares of vegetation have been burned and about 1,500 houses have been destroyed. Although the country is accustomed to bushfires, the speed and violence with which these fires break out is unprecedented.
