On 18 October 2019, numerous demonstrations are being organised in Chile, following the rise of the price of metro tickets in Santiago. More than a million people descend into the streets in the following days. President Sebastian Pinera declares a state of emergency in the country and deploys the army. A situation, never seen since the end of Pinochet's dictatorship, leading to spontaneous social tension.

On 28 October, the state of emergency is lifted. Twenty people were killed and 359 were wounded in the eyes as a result of clashes with the police. The demonstrations continued.

In 2020, the cameras of the international TV channels left but the traces of the protest are still visible in the streets of Valparaiso.

In October 2020, the rallies started again, after the lockdown due to the Covid-19 crises. This social movement opened the door for a possible change in the constitution that has been in effect since the dictatorship. On Sunday 25 October 2020, a referendum in favour or against the drafting of a new constitution will be put to the vote.
