Retrospective Johnny Hallyday (1961-1965)
2017

Jean-Philippe Smet, better known as Johnny Hallyday, passed away at the age of 74.

At the beginning of the sixties, Johnny Hallyday becomes a young star and his success hits keep rolling. Between 1961 and 1964, this front stage man is famous on the screen and at the Olympia concert hall with the twist, on an excessiveness career between rock’n’roll and light music.

It’s in the Olympia concert hall, where Piaf, Barbara or Dalida have performed, that Johnny Hallyday sings in 1961 for his new album called Come dance the twist signed with Phillips. He has a strong personality, notable for his guitar, his stage presence and his rock’n’roll poses, and his texts are becoming more romantic.
People are fascinated by Johnny, either he sings in French or in English. Leader of the French television musical show Salut les Copains and of the Yeye generation, he plays in movies like Where are you from, Johnny ?, in 1964, which makes him more and more popular.
His charismatic aura is as famous as his passions and his excesses. At that times he’s in relationship with the French singer Sylvie Vartan, playing Gigi in the first movie where Johnny is also playing.

Claude Schwartz photographer followed Johnny Hallyday in this icon period, still marking on the French music.
